During this time of covid when my brain was exploding with uncertainty and anxiety, every room in my house felt occupied, full. Our house was actually full. I wasn’t overreacting. Our boys were now doing virtual school at home and extra-curricular activities disappeared. During the hotter summer months, there was no swimming so we stayed inside. It reminded me of that season in motherhood where I couldn’t even close the door to the bathroom for a second before hearing them call for me or listening to them knock on the door.
I hunted out quiet places, even if that place was only in my mind. Sometimes it was a breathing meditation, sometimes it was looking out the window at the trees, sometimes brushing the dog, sometimes folding towels. I hunted for those rarefied, private moments where I could find my way back to hope, looking for my center, looking for myself. In this painting, the more I edited and simplified, the better it became.
