I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.Louisa May Alcott
I have been thinking about this Louisa May Alcott quote for several months and it has seeped into this series. When I read it, it demanded my attention and I have been turning it over in my mind ever since.
One of the reasons that I really like this quote is that it is not as much about bravery but about focus. I am reminded (again) that I am not in charge of the storms that swirl around me and that I have no control over them. Being afraid has some legitimacy because life can be really scary, but being afraid won’t make the storms clear. Being brave won’t make them go away either! Staying focused on the storms is a waste of time. However, I can control how I respond to those storms and I can learn to sail my own ship through those storms. I am learning how to live my own life fully. I will sail and explore and expand my own world. And that is what requires the real bravery.
The scaffold of this series is one of discovering and pursuing my own way. I’m learning how to become a better painter and I’m heading in a direction that is my own authentic exploration.
